The argument I've heard for parking in neutral is "If the car gets bumped while parked, it won't cause damage to the transmission." I dunno how well that stands up to scrutiny, I think if your shit gets hard enough to move it and damage the transmission somehow, it's probably nearly totaled anyway.
99% of the time I park the BMW in gear without the brake on, just because the parking brake is old and having it on is a redundancy, the gear holds it just fine. I'll still use it if I have to park somewhere steep.In the GTI the brake is NON OPTIONAL even on perfectly level ground. In both the MKV and the new one, putting the DSG in park and then letting the car roll onto the parking pin results in increased effort to get the shifter out of park and a really unpleasant clunking noise.
