Mine are X-bars because I wanted the option (for now) to keep the front power windows. NASCAR bars require gutting the doors. Mine are very close to the seats, but my cage builder assured me that was okay. My friend Christina's car is set up the same way and in both cars, the seats almost touch the side bars in places. I think the thought is the cage will dissipate the energy in a crash, and not come in/deform toward you, so very close tolerances are okay.

I could be totally wrong, too.
