A bit late to the angel eye party: 2001 M5

I would assume it's because 5th is the direct drive gear in that transmission, but it's hard to tell without hearing it;

This would be it. Perhaps its just a bearing noise that's taken out of the equation when you put it in 5th. I would turn the radio up.
