this is exactly how my passenger rear bearing went bad on my impreza. the noise changed depending on if i was turning left or right (loading and unloading) and only after checking a few hundred miles later did it actually develop any play at all when i'd try to shake the wheel with the car up in the air. when i replaced it the noise disappeared so it was definitely the bearing.
