The TV Show Thread *Possible Spoilers*
#43
JustinG Wrote:Not calling you out, but just an observation on my travels through the True Detective Reddit forum.

A lot of people are bitching about the second season, how its slow, and there is too much backstory, and why hasnt anyone died yet, when will it pick up the pace. ITS THE SECOND FUCKING EPISODE.

IT IS NOT A MICHAEL BAY FILM.

Im trying to figure out what more these people want.

Ya got a sex addicted dead guy with politcal power who was in to Animal dress up and has brass dicks all over his sex apartment
A criminal boss trying to go legit and is leaning towards his old ways of breaking knee caps and murder to get what he wants
An alcoholic Detective who supposedly beat his wifes rapist to death and is caring for the Son of his wifes rapist while now under the influence of previously mentioned criminal boss
A freaky female Cop who likes knives and weird sex and whos dad is incharge of some weird religious cult that likely ties to the dead sex guy.
A CA Highway Patrol officer who cant get it up and is likely a closet homosexual pretending to be a homophobe with some crazy PTSD from his days with with military and Blackwater

Ya know how I know all that......Backstory, it makes the characters interesting. Not just Robots and explosions.

But I guess they got what they wanted in the last 90 seconds when someone gets double tapped by a guy in a bird mask with a shotgun.

I would agree with you actually. What they are doing now is necessary and it's also how they did season 1. The difference to me is these characters are boring and there were a few things that seemed repetitive. Here is how I saw it.

Alcoholic, drunk driving, hard on family male lead actor, oh, looks just like Marty. I swear Collin Farrell drinks from the same damn flask they used in Season 1, but he's dead now so whatever, thank god.

Female cop, okay cool I actually like that. The sex part is exciting but the family part made me yawn and they used it to tie religion back in again, oh, like season 1.

The military cop is completely new and interesting but that's also the story line they seem to be giving the least attention.

Vince Vaughns character lol. Okay well first things first, I have to get past the fact they are using Vince Vaughn. I just don't like him. I can't say I've ever liked any of his movies and I was glad to see his general tone is not comedic. I hate the way his voice gets all whiney and annoying when he's trying to drop a joke. I don't think he's playing the part particularly well thus far either. I don't like Matthew Mcconaughey either, but Rust was my favorite character and the role fit Mcconaughey. I don't think this fits Vince Vaughn but....it's only episode 2, I shall wait.

Now where I'm at is...Rex is right, i felt similar the start of season 1, but that was still interesting. The acting was better and so was the writing. I'm only keeping up with this Season because i'm riding on the awesomeness of Season 1 so i'll patiently wait. I also would have chosen a different cast, but again, I'm giving it a chance. Season 1 also gave you a taste of the mystery at hand while providing back story and character development with the flashbacks.

You make a very good point about the dude with the animal head though. This might be the main difference for me. I loved Criminal Minds because they always did weird shit. They had to hunt down the pathological serial killer by watching all his weird behavioral patterns and etc. Those criminals were always the most fucked up. Season 1 was very similar to that. The weirdness of it alone made me screw my face up and say "alright I guess I'll watch the next one and see cause that was weird as fuck". THE MYSTERY WAS EXCITING, I WANTED TO SOLVE IT TOO. Season 2 has a more CSI vibe. CSI was boring lol.

My perspective might also be a little different considering I rolled into Season 2 fifteen minutes after finishing season 1 lol
