Was there a flash forward or something so we know he makes it? I was optimistic until the double tap.

The only thing I noticed was in the preview of the next episode, the Vinci PD guy said "one of my guys was shot", not killed, but I'm with you - point blank 12 ga. to the gut hock:

I didn't see anything in that scene that tells me he wasn't shot with a less than lethal shotgun load, like bean bags or big rubber pellets, which would make his survival more likely.
