i build a standing desk about 4 years ago due primarily to getting tons of back and neck pain from craning over to look at a monitor from a low desk and chair. i also hated how my legs felt sitting for 8-10 hours straight.
i do still like to sit for a few hours to either rest my feet or eat at my desk, so i got a tall desk chair to go with the standing desk. i love it now, much more comfortable and as a bonus all my stuff is up out of my kids reach.
basically the flat desk surface is a 10' x 18" rejected melamine panel from a custom closet installation. its mounted on 2 cheap ikea PC cabinets and then those are fitted onto 2 riser structures i built when i decided to convert to standing. whole thing is worth probably $100 in materials and time. i'll take a shot tomorrow for anyone interested.
