It always amazes me how little niche car groups will drive up the price of a certain factory or rare/out-of-production aftermarket part.
My favorite example was when I swapped the seats in my car. BMW people in general nerd out about the Vader seats, they were pretty wild looking, very 90s, but most people who have actually owned an E36 M3 will tell you they're not very good at actually being seats. The bolsters are set up for a guy with a 48" waist, the lumbar support instantly disintegrates, and unless you got lucky and the original owner conditioned the seats once a week, the leather has almost certainly gone to shit. Also the headrest everyone loves is no where near your actual head.
However, because they are wild looking, every brosarus building the next turbo '93 325is that's going to "literally break the E36 game" wants to put them in their car. Not to mention all the people that swap them into E30s. And they all want black. As such a set of absolutely mint black vaders can go for as much as $1200 depending on condition and options, but a set of gray ones might only get $4-500 no matter how perfect they are.
I bought a set of clean E46 M seats with heat, power lumbar/bolster adjustment and a headrest that will actually keep my neck from snapping for $500, and turned around and sold my absolutely beat to shit vaders for $400. The dude was pumped too, he was planning on having them reupholstered.... to install in his slammed E30 'vert.
