i think it can be done but you need a coax to ethernet (MOCA) bridge too. easiest way to avoid rental fee is to just buy a red/black actiontec off ebay.
how i dont pay the rental fee: when signing up, i put "have my own equipement" on the signup form.
tech comes to my house, gets a new red/black router from his truck and installs it, and it never shows up on my bill. i didnt do that on purpose (i had an old silver/black that was 'mine' that i planned to use) but i wont argue.
