In AMURRICA, chip & pin use isnt widespread enough to overcome the stupidity threshold. The technology is really mature across the pond (at least 5 years old now), and eventually we'll get there.
Anyways. With the chip, the waiter/cashier/etc never has to touch the card and it never leaves your sight. And you dont swipe the card at all, you hold it next to the reader and type the pin in the keypad. Once the US adopts chip & pin most card companies will take the stripe off of the cards completely and we can be rid of those stupid things. Outside of massive data breaches, most credit card fraud comes from pulling the card data off of magnetic stripes.
