They really can be all over the place. I've driven some I hate more than a typical auto, some better; though to be clear I've never met an auto I "like". The ones that don't try to "shift" though when you floor it, (like the Prius) and just provide constant 6k RPM thrust are kinda neat though. And this one was pretty quick to hop from ~1.5k RPM cruising to 3-4k when you needed to pass (at least in sport mode). Then OD off is like track/autocross mode- it hovers at 3-3.5k or goes up from there when you ask for it, provides engine braking, and never goes to sleep. That's something a regular auto really cannot do.
