2009+ is the iDrive that doesn't suck. Most of the 35i cars switched over to the N55 in 09-10, which is a single twin scroll turbo instead of twin turbos. I think they're more reliable and the have better driveability and mileage. The 3-series touring only came in naturally aspirated flavor so the turbo would only be an option if you got the X3.
The N/A motor is good, and presumably a lot cheaper to own in the long run, but it's 230hp/200ft-lbs and presumably a good bit heavier than your GTI, so you might find yourself driving with a heavier foot than normal.
