The C30 is a nice looking car and even so on paper, but it gets DESTROYED in any review ever. Apparently a pretty terrible car.
The A3 is an option, but it has the same 2.0 motor (unless you go TDI). Would have to be 2012+ because they fixed the problem that wasn't a problem then. (We don't want to afford a 2012+ A4). The A3 is also the same size as the GTI and IMO has a much worse interior. I think they're making that better in 2015? It's basically a 2005 interior as far as I remember.
