I'm pretty sure every car salesman ever had an MKIV GTI and it was the fastest bestest car they ever owned.
Food for thought, at this point you're only a few months away from the new GTI. It's supposed to be bigger, lighter and better than the MKVI. The seats look more supportive at the very least, if that's one of the wifey's hangups. You won't get AWD, but the DSG in the GTI would be far more satisfying to own than the Tiptronic in the Audi. Depending on the options you want a new GTI would probably be similar in price to the CPO Audi.
