I'd clean the ICV too, that will definitely screw with your idle, some degree of grumpiness when cold is pretty normal though.
All manual cars I've had are grumpy when they're extremely cold, but my E36 is the worst about it. Try double clutching when it's super cold for the first few shifts. I used to have to do that to get it into 2nd without forcing it.
And yeah, my car sounds like Geppeto's fuckin' workshop when it's cold.
