It can take some driving and a few attempts to get the system fully bled. It's really a pain on the E36. Hopefully things will be good and you just had an air bubble as Joey said.
Yeah, I got the call and was like, check your clamps and fill er up! If you are getting steam/bubbles, change the clamp, clamps are cheap!
One reason I went to the euro cooling system setup on all my E36s almost immediately was the inanely stupid bleed procedure. I just prepare after 30 miles of driving to fill up the reservoir again even after bleeding on a stock E36.
