Small business will always have its place, I make a genuinely concerted effort to support them whenever I can even when they might cost a little more for a product / service (my father is a small business owner as are many of my friends). With the Amazons and e-commerce giants of the world offering prices, products and capabilities that are just flat out unreachable to most other companies, small businesses REALLY have to focus on customer service and doing the right thing to maintain customer retention. They also have to be good at "selling" people on why it is worth spending a little more / waiting a little longer for them and run their businesses with knife edge efficiency.
This economy (and to an underappreciated extent social media) has really done a good job at weeding out poor business owners.
