I used to think that they were stupid, but now that I own a house I appreciate that my neighbors cant paint their house pink or turn their front lawn into a junkyard.

Mine is not cheap (but then again they do all my cutting the lawn/mulching/leaf removal/weeding). But I +1 your statement. After searching around for a house last year, I was shocked at how I would straight turn down a house before even walking in because of the neighbor's houses.
