Ugh there is a brandy-new S4 sedan that parks near me at work every day, so ridiculously awesome.
Chris would you be willing to look a couple years older and roll the budget back at a bit? Since the power and features seemed lacking for the price, you could get a fully loaded, balls out model of something for ~$25k and keep the extra money for fancy-car maintenance. There's the aforementioned E55 AMG (or any AMG models from ~2005-2008), you could get into a Cayman S in that price range (so you can really show the plebeians who's boss), E39 M5, E46 M3, maybe a E90/92 M3 or definitely a 335i sport. You could also get into a slightly older S4, but out of the whole mess that one would probably be the biggest pain in the ass.
I'm always inclined to go a little bit older and get "more car," especially when you have room in the budget to keep it in fighting shape, and a few simple DIY projects can give you a lot of the creature comforts of the brand new cars, but to each their own.
