There's been a trend in firearms training to avoid "using" the slide stop for anything other than administratively locking the slide open. Lots of new weapons have followed this trend, making the slide stops both small and under heavy spring pressure. The science behind this is pretty obvious. Fiddling a slide stop after inserting a magazine is a fine motor motion. You gotta use your fingertips. Grabbing the rear of the slide and slingshotting that motherfucker like you mean it is a gross motor motion. Guess which is easier under stress?
