If you raced a SV650 it'd be cheap to buy, easy on tires, gas, and brakes, but not brain-scrambling fast. And they sound cool. Or you could go one step further and race a 250 (not a 2-stroke 250, those are really fast, expensive, and somewhat prone to highsides).
You could get away with just renting a uhaul trailer like I did, or get a cheap open deck trailer from harbor freight. You could get the bike, leathers, and trailer for probably $4000-5000, or $3500-$4500 if you just rented trailers.
