In terms of getting the message out...

The forum isn't enough. There are plenty of members (like I used to be) that just don't navigate the forums enough to recognize what can be going on in the near future. The email system is a great source but often gets clumped into the "JMU emails to ignore" category, and are overlooked. I think it would be a good idea to have a text-messaging system that is used on a more frequent basis that can let members know of events...because they're guaranteed to read it. This isn't to say that the forum and email notification system won't be used, because they most certainly will, they just have to be supplemented with another method.

The 33 cruises fell under the same thing you were worried about giving out stickers to people for. Its really easy for tihngs to get out of hand when 5-12 "performance" cars go for a cruise on that type of road with road racing enthuists behind the wheel. Its just risky and by all means, if you feel the risk can be managed then I would love to go on a cruise. Most of the cars in the club that would go on cruises have been broken all year anyways so that would be another reason it didn't happen.

Gas prices are also high which would limit participation unless those who are riding in the cars would like to pitch in, but then you have the uncomfortable asking for money if they don't offer which may take the fun out of it.

As far as the mass texting goes, the problem is there is no good way to do it. You can pay for a service that allows you to do it from a computer but the services are usually monthly fees and not very cheap and until you try them, you don't know which one actually works right and doesn't also spam all your members with ads.

That being said, I have something setup but it was so rigged and complicated that it wouldn't always work right and I never knew which members wern't gettign txts and which were. It involved our google voice number on the google voice app on my phone, and an app I paid for on my phone which allows google voice to send the message. It seemed to work great sometimes and sometimes barely at all. And you have to setup your contact lists right on your phone. Ultimately, it was a huge pain in the ass trial and error process that didn't work right all the time which just won't do if thats how you are trying to communicate with your members.
