the scoop on the roof is definitely for driver/navigator air ventilation, like what RJ said.

on that particular car, the box on the roof is a camera. Subaru designed a ventilation system that pulls air from the bumper area.
The new cars (like in the mud splash pic) are back to using roof mounted ventillation
