Higher sidewall tires can hold a lot more of a load than low-profile tires... and I am sure that 1985 tire tech was not what it is today. Wider tires are a lot harder to manufacture than skinny ones. I'm also sure tire costs played into the equation. So manufacturers used narrow skinny tires because they were cheaper and could handle the heavy loads placed on them.
Why do people just post what they are thinking? Without thinking.
