yea, i guess i dont see them as reliable because my idea of a bulletproof engine is the h23 or the toyota 5s-fe. I've seen both of these engines mistreated beyond belief and still make around stock power. My friend drove his si lude for 25,000 miles on the same oil and filter, and he ran his intake open element (no air filter whatsoever). granted he burned a quart every 600 miles or so he figured that he had done a couple of oil changes over that time. I recall days riding with him where he'd be taking his car to 7000 rpms for about 15 minutes of hard driving just screwing around, and his oil light would come on. He'd drive to a gas station add a quart.......oil still not on the stick........add another quart........oil hardly on the stick..........3rd quart and it was where it was supposed to be. And i had pulled his dip stick one time and clumps of something came out on it........don't know what. Anyways.......that's my idea of a bulletproof engine. Seen about the exact same scenario with my friend who has a GT celica with the 5s-fe, 280,000 miles on the engine hadn't changed the oil in around 18,000 miles and still took it to redline on a daily basis. If you do that with a d-series.......just have another engine handy to swap out. I guess thats why i see them as no good, but i also see the engine i have in my car currently as no good even though everyone else says theyre "reliable" but i could complain just as bad about the 4a-fe line of engines seeing how theyre nearly identical to the d16a3. Dah well i guess my idea of reliable means that you can just be a complete idiot and not worry about anything screwing up, but im sure none of us here are even close to as bad with our cars as the aforementioned, cause that's just complete negligence
