That's the part that's debatable. There is no denying build quality, but the people who had Macs in school had nothing but problems living in a Windows world. My Mac hate aside, I just don't want to deal with two extra steps or relearn the way I do things.
Your math is flawed though, because you didn't factor the time value of money of paying twice as much initially. That comparison also assumes people have enough liquid assets to be able to afford a $1700 outlay. Even if it did break even in the end, I don't want to fork out that much cash... which is kinda the point of this thread.
