I'm just trying to figure out if there's something:

a) small and light enough that I'd actually consider carrying it, and profile (flatness?) seems to me to be pretty important
b) not SO small that it's not fun to practice with and actually has non-embarrasing power

These characteristics describe a SIG P239. Find a CPO or used one if price is the issue.

The figuring it out at the range method is nice and all, but impractical unless the gun shop is going to let people walk out with a sack-full-o-guns to try before they buy.
