Here is one way to look at it - you keep talking about how all the nicer cars you are looking at cost at least 2x as much money as the one that you are about to buy.

Your car:
2k for car
$600 for suspension
$200 to $300 for exhaust
$300 to $500 for tires and rims
$200 to fix that broken window
$300 to $500 in supplies for paint / body work (at the least if you want it to look good)

That is all cheap, assuming you don't run into other maintenance or inspection issues.

For the same 4 or 5k dollars, you could just buy a car that already has paint, a swapped engine, wheels, good tires and isn't all rusted out. It also won't take 100 hours of work to get it into good condition.
