I jumped ship from Verizon to AT&T back in October 2007. I switched for the iPhone, but have played with other phones on their network (swapping SIM cards is so easy). I have a cheapie $20 phone that I'll put my SIM card in and use for track days or going places that I would get the iPhone messed up or broken.
No complaints about service. I drop signal for about a 3 mile chunk of I-66 East, but it seems all carriers will drop there. Same deal for the top of whatever mountain 33West is part of... nobody gets service up there.
I'd avoid the iPhone if you're really rough on your phone or lose it a lot. Water damaged iPhones are $199 replacement cost, lost ones are $399/$499 because you have to buy a new phone. No clue why AT&T doesn't offer insurance on the phone.
