i've never used a virus app in my ~25 years of using a pc.
when i was young, i had a hard drive wiped completely clean by a trojan.
when i was in college i got a weak virus that i was able to kill myself.
just a few weeks ago i got another that was a bit of a pain, but i eventually wiped it out.
i download a lot of porn and illegal software. common sense rules the day... each time i've gotten something, i had a momentary lack in judgment.
i don't understand how regular computer users can be so stupid to get viruses... if you're not "hacking" and dealing with apps that can be seriously tricky, there is no excuse.
I really disagree with this - there are a lot of sites that appear to be legitimate but will try to backdoor things onto your system using javascript / other dynamic scripting languages. Music lyrics sites are one of the main offenders. Even fully patched Firefox (which seems to have closed a lot of issues since the 2.0 days) and IE8 installs can fall prey to these attacks.
I will agree that it's safe to not use any AV software if you don't surf the internet with Javascript / Java applets enabled though.
Firefox with NoScript FTW
