280z is a little more portly, but the frame is also much more substantial. If you're tracking an S30 z, it's pretty much a moot point b/c the 240 would theoretically need more metal to make it as stiff as the 280 in same form. 280s are also much more common, newer (less rust in theory) and not as highly desired so easier to negotiate on price.
