Hmm, I'd be careful here. You're not dealing with straight metal, you're dealing with a wire that transmits current from a thermocouple. If all he was bending was the outer jacket (With nothing inside of it) heat would probably work fine.

Another caution with heat that it often makes metal more brittle when the metal is taken to a glowing state. Depends on the metal, how it was tempered/anieled, etc, of course.

I think for this application, bend it and get it over with. If it feels really resistant or it's not bending evenly, stop and go to plan B.
