Does him becoming president give hope to the least among us, in particular those that grow up in poor housing projects, with lots of violence and drugs around?

Or, looking at the motivation behind the thinking Million Man March and the Millions More March where oral committments were made by those involved, but a lot of those promises did not seem to come to fruition. Just thinking out loud. Could people just feel a blip, and then go back to their same old ways, after the novelty is over?
No. People are motivated by the need/desire for them to better themselves, not because somebody was able to accomplish something. If a person is inspired by the accomplishments of another, it will be short-lived unless they have a personal stake and are willing to make sacrifices to accomplish it. Regardless of what race or walk of life you come from, in our world you can accomplish almost anything if you are willing to work for it.
None of Little Lebowski Urban Achievers accomplished something b/c a dude in a wheelchair supported them; they did it for themselves.

I think for some people it will inspire them because they can see what is possible and it might be greater than what they thought possible. I'm sure we've all had an experience in our life when someone did something big and we thought, "Hey, I could do that too." It's not that we were lazy and uninspired before, it's just that you didn't know what you were capable of until you saw an example.

I think Obama getting elected will help some people change their attitudes about their lots in life. Especially for Black America. No one can say, "The Man is holding me down," when The Man is a black dude.

He won't cure poverty or 'pay your gas bill' but don't underestimate how big his victory is for people in this country and around the world. A lot of us take the American Dream for granted because maybe we've always had it there in front of us but for those for whom it has always been a fairy tale Obama's election might be the kick in the pants they need.
