Personally I don't like how glocks feel in my hand, I've shot a few of them and they certaintly are nice guns, but not for me. I'm gonna get some hate for saying this, but everyone that's been shooting with me has heard this, I have a Ruger P89 9mm and it's my favorite gun. It's accurate, relatively light for a larger gun and I've put 1700 rounds through it without any jams/misfires/bobbles/anything.
I have a springfield XD .40 sub-compact (3") that is a fun and reliable gun to shoot but not horribly accurate due to its small size. The sights are large and easy to use on a quick pull though.
I had a Taurus Millenium .40 and that gun SUCKED. It would jam at least once every 50 rounds and wasn't accurate for shit. I traded it to get the XD and the XD is WELL worth the extra money if that is the type gun your in the market for.
I recently traded my .45LC revolver in for a Rock Island Armory 1911 and it is the best feeling gun I have ever held in my hand. I haven't gotten to shoot it yet but if it shoots anything like it feels it will quickly replace my Ruger as my favorite gun.
As far as home defense goes I've got a mossberg 500 with a tactical handle (no stock, just a pistol grip). It's a nice gun that hasn't given me any problems. All black, loud, but a pain to shoot from the hip. My wrist has to be slightly tweaked to shoot it from the hip and since I have pins and plates in my forearm it causes some discomfort, but if I hold it up in front of me one handed it isn't bad to shoot at all. I've also got a bolt action J.R. Stevens 410 shotgun but I wouldn't recommend it for anything other than picking off groundhogs in the garden.
