I second the .357. Revolvers are more rugged too. I like single action, myself. Ruger's new guns have a plate that moved up when the gun's cocked so the hammer never hits the firing pin directly, and thus, should basically never, ever break.

These convertibles would be good in a disaster, haha.
If you're going to spend in the 5 - 600$ range, just go ahead and get an HK 9mm usp on consignment at a small gun store or something. New they are like 750, but they are really sweet guns.
