miata engine is non-interference so other than stranding you, breaking the timing belt isnt a big deal.
hell, i put a used timing belt on my car when i swapped the motor out.
I have seen several miatas shred their timing belts from timing cover bolts coming loose. Has happened to me twice and matt once.
