I don't have much constructive to add, those that are giving you advice have covered just about everything I can think of, and they have more experience. I'm a fan of cheaper helmets, my $100 HJC is comfortable enough, to me, for hours. Try on as much gear as you can before buying, especially helmets. An XL helmet isn't an XL with everyone. A size 46 jacket is like, a rough guideline that it'll fit a large human. But the sizing charts help.... a little. Wera forum, craigslist, ebay can be great sources of lightly used gear once you find what fits you.
I will however, 3rd the GS500 recommendation, I'm still loving mine. I love it long time. It will be going to the track again this weekend too. I've done pretty much nothing other than tires and front brake pads. Oh, and the $50 case sliders were well worth it, I've already "tested" them and was back out the next session. Compared to getting a 10 yr old economy car ready for the track, it is a dream. Yes, I get SMOKED in the straights. By everyone.
(my coworker might be selling his soon, I'll post in FS if he does)

The only thing that stops a bad guy with a van is a good guy with a van
