Evan Wrote:better to rent the cable modem. gives you the flexibility to change to DSL, or FiOS, etc. Otherwise its going to take you 3 or 4 years just to recoup the cost of the modem. And the good part about renting is that if it craps out, they just give you a new one.
3 or 4 years? More like 1 year if you buy new, less than that if you buy used.
Ebay has a billion of 'em, especially now that people are switching over to FIOS.
I agree with the "what if you switch" part, but it doesn't sound like they plan on that any time soon. I purchased a cable modem at the old house, changed to DSL, then ended up having to use it again in the new house... and then just switched to FIOS. It ended up saving me in the long run but your mileage may vary.

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth
