Yup. Even if the beater is $1000, gas needs to be near $4/gallon and you need a substantial commute to break even in the first year. Sure you save on gas, but you just replaced it with buying a car, registration, insurance and another vehicle to maintain.
The basic maths isnt hard... think it all the way through though.
