Californians are truly a bunch of hippocrites when it comes to the environment (contrary to their avantgarde image). I received more junk mail in my first two months living here than I have in my entire life combined. Recycling - what a joke. CARB is an extortionist institution that simply wants to make an extra buck while the emissions standards are IDENTICAL to those in many other states (ie NoVA). No safety inspections on cars that leave shit all over the side of the freeway. Shall I mention all the other urban "green" images they violate when it comes to water, electricity, etc?

As for story A, I have zero sympathy and could care less what happened to the guy. Sure there is a genuine percentage (albeit small) of homeless people that need assistance (since they are usually mentally disabled). However, the majority of bums are simply milking what's "easy" in life by panhandling, preying on "sympathetic" liberals (have you ever seen all the bums around GWU?), and bleeding our entitlement system dry. F' them. The difference/shock factor you speak of is that people in CA are too busy thinking about themselves and how they can either (1) sue, (2) reap entitlement benefits, (3) pretend that they're special, or (4) what fake organic food they should be ordering for dinner.
