I believe the main reason for the conversion is that it will allow you to upgrade the brakes and rotors to be larger as well as it'll relieve more stress on the studs.

My protege had 5 lug.... no idea why... my next door neighbor's dog had bigger pickup than that POS.

i think the protege's have 5-lugs due to the really high offset of the wheels. I know Ryan's MSP has an offset of +55. Mabe with that high of an offset it has to have 5-lugs? Other than that i would have no clue.
