Every time I do that on a bike (since I'm hyper paranoid about my bikes overheating) it's time to go within 10 seconds - without fail.
i only do it at lights i know. i do it waiting to cross 29 on glebe and also where williamsburg meets glebe. if you miss that light, you have a clear display of the walk signs. if they're telling the people to cross, you have at least 25 seconds of sitting to do (20s countdown, 5s delay).
