I probably would have shipped it to the guy with guaranteed delivery. I've seen the way "throwers" handle bags and I'd be more worried something was damaged or missing by checking it than shipping it. Then you could just check-in online and have a carry-on with your clothes.
Something to consider for others flying out to pick something up.
