I think that's debateable. We have shows like Survivorman and Les Stroud wasn't famous when the show was conceived. Why did the network care about some random schmoe living in the woods for a week? You have shows like Man vs. Wild where there is a crew who another no-name on camera. I'm certain popularity had influence but I can't say with any certainty that's why the show exists... and neither can you.
