...because people want a smaller car? Contrary to popular opinion, not everyone tracks their cars and most of those people don't give a flying fudge how much their car weighs. If it's sporty and comfortable (creature comforts cost weight) why do they care what it weighs? Gas mileage? If they cared about that they wouldn't buy a car with 230+ hp. If anything, people might actually like that it's beefier because it will get less owned when hit by a 5000lb SUV.
The Civic and MS3 are economy cars, or based on an economy chassis. Economy cars weigh less because they have plastic and less "doo-dads."
Heck my car is 3700lbs and it doesn't bother me one bit.

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth
