I've been studying the historic price trends of 911s and they are a great buy at 6 to 8 years old. All non-turbo 911s have a huge value drop during the first four or five years, but then they hold value very nicely after.
Case in point: the 993 followed this trend and has held value (or in low mileage cases increased). I'm not sure if the 996 will be as solid simply because it is the bastard child 911, but a 911 nonetheless.
If you're planning to spend $35,000, you'll be able to get most, if not all, out in 2 or 3 years upon sale. (Assuming you don't wreck it or put tons of miles on it.)
