4cyl Fiero begat 240SX. 240 totalled twice, begat '90 MX6 to punish myself for being a moron. FWD torture worked, I calmed down, begat Fiero Formula. Working at Bimmerworld begat the E36 325i. Payments on 325i and getting married/moving begat '84 318i.
I wanted something MUCH less valuable to use on the track (crashing the E36 wasn't something I wanted to afford), the weight of the E30 chassis intrigued me, old (simple) tech engine meant I could work on it, and I wanted to try a BMW built as they were meant to be, when they didn't use plastic where it doesn't belong and have to cut corners to compete with the ricemobiles. It was bought, in a pinch, sight unseen with massive rod knock from a yard in NC for $400. Actually a HIGH price for the model/condition, but I was running out of time, and the $$ included delivery. I still wish I had tested that engine to see what a 4th to 1st shift really does. That, with a fresh engine/tranny bought on ebay from an ex SCCA IT guy is my current car. I threw it together with the deadline being our wedding, which I did meet, and its first real drive was 7 hours down to Atlanta.
