Yeah its different than what we've done in the past but if they got much better results off campus then I can't argue with that. The only downside is that you might not attract as many potential new student members to the event.
Another plus is that you can sell food and have more leeway in what side events you do. So for instance you'd probably never get the campus to approve pocket bikes or a moto stunt show but you could do that off campus.
