You can reverse the red and black wires without a problem on the head phone jack, it will just reverse your left and right stereo sound.
It's just like on a big speaker that has input an output, you can run input into the output jack and it will sound the same.

You can use reversing the polarity to do noise cancellation, which is pretty cool. I'll stop talking now.
