Back in highschool when I used to play legion we used to scrim the types of leagues that you seem to be talking about (18+). IIRC most were actually arround early to mid twenties, but they were definitely skilled.
Having not been around the game in a few years I doubt that I could practice for a month or two and be on par, or even a little worse than what they were. But I wouldn't be surprised if a league containing players that are a little more rusty such as yourself did exist. Northern Virginia has so many different leagues for stuff like that.
Concerning softball, I play IM here, and I played for both the BEA and BLS softball teams the past two summers, and I found that I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. I also distinctly remember seeing a lot more competitive softball leagues around Fairfax. I think it might be a good idea to attend one of the more competitive games and see if its up to your standards. You might be pleasantly surprised.
